How do I test my broadband speed?
To see what speed your home broadband connection is running at, and/or the speeds to your devices, you can run quick speed tests.
To test the speed of the connection to your router
If you have an eero router the eero app automatically runs a speed test every two days.
You can see the latest results, or run a new test in the app:
Go to the Activity icon at the bottom of the page
Tap Speed
Tap Run Speed Test
If you have an Arris or Asus router find out more about them here.
To test the speed of the connection to your devices
Use an online speed checker like this one from ookla.
You’ll be able to test the speeds of the connection to your hard-wired devices as well as your devices connected to the Wi-Fi.
Hard-wired devices (connected by Ethernet cable)
Download the desktop version best suited to your device (Windows or MacOS).
Once it’s downloaded you can use it to test your connection speed at different times of the day and track the results.
To get the clearest reading of the true speed you are getting, first, restart your laptop and close all your other open browsers and applications.
We recommend using a CAT5e cable or above to hard-wire devices like games consoles, PCs, and laptops, as they support high speeds, from 100 Mbps and up. Remember not all devices are capable of handling Gigabit speeds, your speed test will reflect that.
Wireless devices (connected to the Wi-Fi)
Go to https://www.speedtest.net to test your connection speed.
The speed you get will depend on what the device can handle - older devices may not support faster speeds - your distance from the router, the position of the router, and interference from other wireless devices or appliances.
